Is That How I Sound To You?
Want to write dialog that sounds like real life?
Forget it. Real life dialog is like Reality TV. It sucks.
We stammer, repeat. We search for words, or thoughts. We often don't say what we mean or mean what we say. Or speak in incomplete sentences. Worse yet, we're boring! For me, I want to write smarter characters who say it better than real life. I want my character's words to have more meaning than just what's being said. That takes work on our part, to have them say something with complexity that sounds natural.
If you want to write good dialog, then first write what the characters need to say, then go back and rewrite it in the character's specific voice. And consider that the best dialog may be unspoken. You can't be afraid to make room for silence in your scripts.
Silence. That's the sound of turning off Reality TV. Ahhh!
