Limitations and Determination
Creativity is the marriage of limitations and determination. If you want to be truly creative, then you must embrace limitations. A man playing his hand-made oilcan guitar is the same as a poet writing a sonnet or an indie filmmaker balancing story and budget. We respond positively to the creativity in much the same way. The story behind the art enhances our appreciation of it.
Imagine if the guitar player was strumming a Gibson, or if the poem was a pop song, or if the film was a big budget summer blockbuster. For us to even notice them, they would have to be virtuoso, technically perfect. It a different kind of satisfaction. However, when we understand the limitations the artist has to overcome, we connect with it, we appreciate it on a human level. As humans we crave connection, not perfection.
Here's an interesting challenge to Hollywood Studios: Make more small and medium budget movies that have really interersting stories behind the stories, and then sell that story first. I'll bet that you'll find a more passionate audience, and therefore a more profitable movie.
I had Life Inside Out and ODD BRODSKY on my mind when I wrote this post. Both of these lovely indie movies are testaments to creativity. During their festival runs, they won too many awards to count. Coincidentally, they both feature a female lead, and were written, produced and directed by smart and resourceful women.
